🧠 Flashcard Quiz Generator
Paste your own term and definition pairs to generate an interactive multiple-choice quiz. Runs entirely in your browser.
How the questions are built
Each line becomes one card, split at its first pipe. The term is shown and you pick its definition from four options:
Osmosis | Movement of water across a membrane
^term ^definition
question = one term
answer = that term's definition
distractors = 3 definitions drawn at random from your other cards
options = the 4, shuffled
The card order and the option order are both shuffled with the browser's cryptographic random source, so the correct answer is not more likely to sit in any one position. Five pairs give five questions with four options each; every card is asked exactly once.
Getting the input right
- Four pairs is the minimum. Below that there are not enough other definitions to fill three wrong answers, and the tool refuses to start.
- Only the first pipe splits the line. A definition may contain further pipes; a term may not.
- Lines with no pipe are dropped silently, along with blank lines. If your quiz is shorter than expected, that is why.
- Keep definitions distinct. Two cards sharing identical wording make a question with two correct-looking options.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it need at least four cards?
Every question needs one right answer and three wrong ones, and the wrong ones come from your own other definitions rather than being invented. Four cards is the smallest set that supplies them.
Does it re-ask the ones I got wrong?
No. A run covers each card once and then reports your score. Press Start Quiz again for a fresh shuffle, or paste in just the cards you missed to drill those.
Can I be shown the definition and asked for the term?
Not directly - questions always run term to definition. To test the reverse, swap the two sides of each line before you paste, putting the definition first.
