How the grade is worked out
Points earned are divided by points possible, converted to a percentage, and matched against a standard US plus/minus scale. The percentage is shown to two decimal places, so a borderline result is not hidden by rounding.

Check the scale before you trust the letter
The percentage is a fact; the letter is a convention. Scales vary more than most people expect:
- Many institutions use a flat ten-point scale with no plus or minus, so 90 to 100 is simply an A.
- Some never award an A+ at all and cap the top grade at A.
- Nursing, pharmacy and some engineering programmes set the pass mark at 75 or 80 rather than 60.
- UK, Australian and most European systems do not map onto letters in this way at all.

When the assignments are weighted
This tool divides one total by another, which is correct when every point counts equally. It is not correct when a syllabus says something like homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%.
For a weighted course, work out the percentage for each component first, multiply each by its weight as a decimal, then add them:
Homework 88% x 0.20 = 17.6
Midterm 74% x 0.30 = 22.2
Final 91% x 0.50 = 45.5

Frequently asked questions
What letter grade is 85 percent?
A B on the plus/minus scale used here, since B covers 83 to 86.99. On a flat ten-point scale it is also a B, which covers 80 to 89.
What percentage do I need to pass?
60% is the usual floor, giving a D-, the lowest passing grade on this scale. Many programmes set a higher bar for their own courses, so check the syllabus rather than assuming 60.
How do I include extra credit?
Add it to the points earned but not to the points possible. That is what makes it extra credit, and it is why a score above 100% is possible.
Does this calculate my GPA?
No. GPA converts each letter into grade points, typically 4.0 for an A, then averages them across courses weighted by credit hours. This tool handles one score at a time.
Why does 89.99 show as B+ rather than A-?
Because the A- band starts at 90 and the percentage is not rounded up. Showing 89.99 as an A- would misreport a mark that most institutions treat as below the line.
