The US customary ladder
Every cup, pint, quart and gallon here is US liquid measure, converted through litres:
1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 128 fl oz
1 US quart = 0.946352946 L = 2 pints = 32 fl oz
1 US pint = 0.473176473 L = 2 cups = 16 fl oz
1 US cup = 0.2365882365 L = 8 fl oz
1 m³ = 1,000 L
Each step doubles or quadruples the one before it, so the whole system comes back to the fluid ounce of 29.5735 mL. Going the other way, 1 litre is 0.264172 US gallons and 33.814 US fluid ounces.
US against imperial
| Unit | US liquid | Imperial (UK) | Imperial is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gallon | 3.7854 L | 4.5461 L | 20.1% bigger |
| Quart | 946.4 mL | 1,136.5 mL | 20.1% bigger |
| Pint | 473.2 mL | 568.3 mL | 20.1% bigger |
| Fluid ounce | 29.574 mL | 28.413 mL | 3.9% smaller |
The fluid ounce is the odd one out: the imperial one is slightly smaller, but an imperial pint holds 20 of them against the US pint's 16, which is where the 20% gap in the larger units comes from.
Frequently asked questions
Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?
No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, so the imperial one is 20.1% bigger. This tool converts US gallons; for an imperial figure, multiply litres by 0.219969 instead.
How many litres are in a gallon?
3.785 litres for a US gallon, 4.546 for an imperial gallon. A 15 US gallon fuel tank is 56.8 litres, while 15 imperial gallons would be 68.2 litres.
How many ounces are in a pint?
16 US fluid ounces, which is 473 mL. A British pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, or 568 mL, so a pint of beer in London is about 20% larger than one in New York.
