Everything routes through square metres

The converter turns your figure into square metres, then divides out again into every other unit. These are the exact definitions it uses:

1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² (0.3048 m squared)
1 yd² = 0.83612736 m² = 9 ft²
1 acre = 4046.8564224 m² = 43,560 ft²
1 ha = 10,000 m² = 2.471054 acres
1 km² = 1,000,000 m² = 100 ha
1 mi² = 2,589,988.110336 m² = 640 acres

Length factors are squared, which is the step people miss. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², not 0.3048 m². Double a room's dimensions and its floor area quadruples.

This tool uses the international acre, 4046.8564224 m², which is the acre in ordinary UK and US use and identical in both. US deed and survey work sometimes quotes the US survey acre instead, which is larger by about 8 parts per million - roughly 0.03 m² per acre, so it only matters across large parcels.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

Exactly 43,560 square feet, which is 4,046.86 square metres. That is a defined value, not a rounded one: an acre was one chain by one furlong, or 66 ft by 660 ft.

How many acres in a hectare?

2.471054 acres. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, or a square 100 m on each side. Going the other way, an acre is 0.404686 hectares.

Is the UK acre the same as the US acre?

Yes for everyday purposes. Both use the international acre of 4,046.8564224 square metres. Only US survey records use a slightly different acre, and the gap is a few square centimetres per acre.
