What the four buttons really do
Each button rewrites the text from scratch, working from what you typed rather than from the last result:
UPPERCASE every letter raised
lowercase every letter lowered
Title Case lower everything, then raise the first character
of each space-separated chunk
Sentence case lower everything, then raise the first letter and
anything following . ! or ?
The two on the right start by flattening your text, which is the source of every surprise below. NASA sent iPhone data comes back as Nasa Sent Iphone Data, because the acronym and the camel case were destroyed before the capitals were put back.
Four edges to check before you paste
- Title Case splits on the space character alone. A word at the start of a new line is glued to the last word of the line above, so it keeps its lowercase letter. Fix those by hand.
- Every word is capitalised, including of, the and and. Newspaper and Chicago title style keep short prepositions and articles lowercase; this is start case, not that.
- A leading quote or bracket blocks it. In "hello the first character is the quote, so the h is never raised.
- Sentence case treats a full stop as a boundary. e.g. this becomes E.G. This, and the lone pronoun I survives only where it happens to open a sentence.
Frequently asked questions
How do I capitalise the first letter of every word?
Use Title Case. Be aware it lowercases the rest of each word first, so USA and McDonald come back as Usa and Mcdonald and need restoring by hand.
What is the difference between title case and sentence case?
Title case raises the first letter of every word, for headings. Sentence case raises only the first letter after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, which is how ordinary prose is written.
Can I undo a conversion?
Nothing is overwritten. Your text stays in the input box and each result is written to the panel below, so clicking a second button converts the original again rather than the last output.
