Enter the cost of a pack of stamp mounts and how many mounts it contains to see the cost per stamp for mounting your collection.
How cost per stamp is worked out
One division, carried to three decimal places because mounts land in fractions of a cent:
cost per stamp = pack cost / mounts per pack
$12.00 / 50 = $0.240 per stamp
$0.240 x 500 stamps = $120.00 to mount the collection
Clearing the mounts box makes it fall back to 1, which reports the whole pack price as the cost of a single mount - the usual cause of a wild-looking answer. A pack cost of zero returns $0.000.
Counting mounts when you buy strips
Pre-cut mounts are easy: the pack states the count. Strip mounts are sold by the strip, around 210 to 215 mm long, and you cut each one to width, so the real mount count is higher than the number on the packet:
mounts per pack = strips x floor(strip length / stamp width)
25 strips, 215 mm each, cut for 25 mm stamps
215 / 25 = 8.6 -> 8 mounts per strip -> 200 mounts
Enter 200, not 25. Mount height is the figure to match to your stamps - a 24 mm strip suits ordinary definitives, 41 mm handles most commemoratives, and souvenir sheets usually want cut-to-size sheet stock. Buying two or three heights covers nearly everything and wastes less than buying every size.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a stamp mount cost each?
Commonly 15 to 30 cents for pre-cut mounts, and noticeably less per stamp if you cut your own from strips. Black-backed mounts usually cost a little more than clear.
What does it cost to mount 1,000 stamps?
At 24 cents each, $240. At 12 cents from strips you cut yourself, $120. Enter your pack price and count to get the per-stamp figure, then multiply.
Are mounts worth it over hinges?
For mint stamps, yes - mounts leave the gum untouched, and that is where the value is. For used stamps and duplicates, hinges are cheaper and do no harm worth the difference.
