A sum, and the number worth deriving from it
total = materials + printing
per page = total / pages in the album
The defaults, $25 of materials and $18 of printing, total $43.00. Over a 20-page album that is $2.15 a page - the figure to weigh when you are deciding between an extra layout and pricier cardstock. The tool adds exactly what you type, so the work is in the two inputs.
Costing the two boxes honestly
- Charge paper by the sheet, not the pack. A 50-sheet pack of 12 x 12 cardstock at $12 is $0.24 a sheet, so 20 sheets cost this project $4.80. Putting the whole $12 in makes one album look expensive and the next one free.
- Do not forget the album. The binder and its protectors are usually the largest single line and easy to leave out because they were bought earlier. Refills are priced per sheet, and each covers two pages.
- Printing means prints, not paper. Multiply prints by the price each - 45 at 15 cents is $6.75 - and cost enlargements separately, since one 8 x 10 can beat a dozen 4 x 6s. Home printing rarely undercuts a lab once ink is counted.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to make a scrapbook?
Work it per page rather than per album. A $43 project over 20 pages runs $2.15 a page, and the gap between a plain layout and a heavily embellished one is mostly stickers, die cuts and enlargements.
Should I count the full price of a paper pack?
Only if the project uses the whole pack. Divide the pack price by the sheet count and charge the sheets you cut into, then carry the rest forward - that is the only way two albums costed a year apart compare fairly.
Are archival supplies worth the extra cost?
For photographs you cannot replace, yes. Acid-free and lignin-free cardstock and PVC-free protectors cost a little more per sheet and are the difference between a page that yellows in a decade and one that does not.
