🗄️ Storage Unit Size Calculator

Select the number of rooms worth of belongings you need to store to get a recommended storage unit size.

Rooms mapped to a unit size

The tool steps through five thresholds and returns the first one your room count fits under:

RoomsUnitFloorVolume at 8 ft
0 - 15 x 525 sq ft200 cu ft
25 x 1050 sq ft400 cu ft
310 x 10100 sq ft800 cu ft
410 x 15150 sq ft1,200 cu ft
5 or more10 x 20200 sq ft1,600 cu ft

Above the first step each extra room is worth 50 sq ft, and the count is capped at 10 rooms - beyond a 10 x 20 you are into two units or a different conversation. Entering 0 still returns a 5 x 5 rather than nothing.

Volume is what you are really buying

Storage is sold by floor area but filled by the cubic foot, so the ceiling height decides the answer as much as the footprint. Most units are 8 ft; some run to 10, which is a quarter more space at the same monthly price. A 10 x 10 at 800 cu ft takes roughly what a 15 ft truck carries, but only if you stack to the roof.

Leave a walkway and you lose about a quarter of the volume. Anything you need to reach - seasonal boxes, tools, business stock - wants the next size up, while a unit you shut for a year can be packed solid. Advertised sizes are nominal too: a 10 x 10 often measures 9 ft 6 in.

Frequently asked questions

What size storage unit do I need for a 2 bedroom apartment?

A 10 x 10 holds a typical two-bedroom - beds, sofa, dining set, appliances and the boxes. Drop to a 5 x 10 if you are storing furniture but keeping the appliances.

How much fits in a 10x10 storage unit?

About 800 cubic feet, which is three rooms of furniture stacked to the ceiling or the load of a 15 ft truck. With an aisle down the middle, plan on 600.

Do I need a climate controlled unit?

Only for wood furniture, electronics, instruments, photographs and anything upholstered, and only if the store is hot or damp. It costs 25 to 50 percent more, so a garage clear-out rarely justifies it.
