📅 Moving Timeline Checklist Generator
Enter your move date to generate a week-by-week checklist of common moving tasks, ordered chronologically.
Eleven tasks counted back from your date
task date = move date - (weeks before x 7 days)
Each of the eleven tasks carries a fixed lead time, and the page subtracts it from whatever date you enter. The box starts eight weeks out, the longest lead time in the list. Give it a date three weeks away and the first four tasks fall in the past - that is the tool telling you to do them now, not to skip them.
Where the lead times come from
- 8 weeks - quotes. Three written estimates take a fortnight to collect, and the good crews book out early.
- 6 weeks - declutter, then book. In that order: what you throw out changes the weight, and the weight changes the quote.
- 4 weeks - supplies and notifications. Schools want notice for records, and a pharmacy transfer is slow.
- 2 weeks - post and utilities. Both need about that long to take effect on the date you asked for.
- 1 week - confirm, and pack essentials.
The list has no landlord in it, and for renters that is the item that matters most: most leases want 30 to 60 days of written notice, so it sits before the eight-week mark. Movers book out 4 to 6 weeks off-peak and 8 to 12 between May and September, when everyone moves.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start planning a move?
Eight weeks before the date covers a normal household move. Renters should start earlier still, since a lease usually demands 30 to 60 days of written notice and that clock runs independently.
How far in advance should I book a moving company?
Six weeks is comfortable outside the summer. From May to September, and for any move in the last three days of a month, book 8 to 12 weeks ahead or take what is left.
What should I do the week before moving day?
Confirm the crew and the arrival window, and pack an essentials box you keep in the car - kettle, chargers, bedding, medication and a change of clothes. Everything else can be in a truck for a day.
