✉️ Change of Address Checklist Generator
Filter by category to see a checklist of common organizations and accounts you should notify of your address change when moving.
How the list is built
The generator holds sixteen entries tagged with one of four categories, and the filter simply shows the ones that match:
shown = all 16, or the 4 items tagged with the category you picked
government 4 financial 4 utilities and services 4 personal 4
The count above the list is the number of items on screen, so it reads 16 on All Categories and 4 on any single one. The checkboxes are there to tick as you work through, but nothing is stored - a refresh clears them, so print the page or copy the list somewhere before you start making calls.
When each one has to be done
| Notify | When |
|---|---|
| Postal Service | about 2 weeks before the move |
| Utilities and internet | 2 weeks before, with a shut-off date |
| Insurance | before you move - premiums are priced on the address |
| Employer and payroll | before the next pay run |
| Driver's licence and registration | usually 10 to 30 days after |
| Banks, cards, subscriptions | the week you arrive |
Work the government row first: a postal redirect buys you time on everything below it, and voter registration in most states rides along with the licence update. Online shopping accounts deserve their own pass, because a saved default address quietly sends a parcel to the old house months later.
Frequently asked questions
Who do I need to notify when I move house?
Sixteen places cover most households: four government, four financial, four utility and service, and four personal. The ones people forget are payroll, the pharmacy and the default shipping address in shopping accounts.
How long does USPS mail forwarding last?
Twelve months for first-class mail and 60 days for magazines. Filing online costs about a dollar as an identity check; the paper form at a post office is free.
How long do I have to update my driver's licence after moving?
Most states give you between 10 and 30 days, and the vehicle registration usually has the same deadline. Check your own DMV, because the window and the fee both vary by state.
