🧑 Scale Figure Height Reference Chart

A quick reference for the typical height of a model human figure (based on an average 5'9" / 175cm adult) at each common model railroad scale.

Where the heights come from

Every figure in the chart is the same 5'9" adult - 1,750 mm - divided by the scale ratio:

figure height = 1750 mm / scale ratio

HO 1:87.1  ->  1750 / 87.1 = 20.1 mm (0.79 in)
N  1:160   ->  1750 / 160  = 10.9 mm (0.43 in)
O  1:48    ->  1750 / 48   = 36.5 mm (1.44 in)

Any other height goes through the same division. A 6'2" (1,880 mm) figure is 21.6 mm in HO, and a child of about 4 ft is 14 mm - a third shorter than the adult beside them, which is what makes a group read as a family rather than a set of clones.

Buying figures that actually match

Boxes are labelled by scale, by millimetre height, or both, and the two do not always agree:

Figures set the perceived scale of everything near them. An oversized figure makes a correctly built structure look like a toy, so check a new pack against a car door or a platform edge before gluing any of it down.

Frequently asked questions

How tall is an HO scale person?

About 20 mm, or just under 0.8 inches, for an average adult. Anything over 22 mm is reading as a very tall man.

Are 28 mm wargaming figures the same as S scale?

No. S scale is 1:64, and a 28 mm wargame figure works out nearer 1:56 once you allow for the eye-level measurement and heroic proportions. They look oversized next to S scale stock.

How tall is a child figure in N scale?

A four-foot child is 1,220 mm, which at 1:160 is 7.6 mm - about two thirds the height of the 11 mm adult in the chart.
