💰 Layout Budget Calculator

Add each item you're planning to buy (track, turnouts, scenery materials, rolling stock) with its cost and quantity to see your total planned layout budget.

How the budget adds up

Each row is quantity times unit cost, and the rows are summed:

line total = cost each x quantity
budget     = line 1 + line 2 + ... + line n

2 turnouts x $25.00        = $50.00
10 flex track x $8.00      = $80.00
total                      = $130.00

+ Add Item appends a row at $10 and quantity 1, ready to rename. A quantity of zero keeps the row visible at $0.00, a useful way to park something you have not committed to. The list is not saved, so copy the totals into your own sheet before closing the tab.

The lines people leave out

Track and benchwork get estimated carefully; the rest arrives in dribs. Ten 3 ft sections of HO flex is 30 feet of main line, realistic for a 4x8, but that plan also needs a dozen turnouts, and a switch machine under each one can cost as much again as the turnout. Give these their own rows:

Rolling stock is the line that grows without a plan. Enter the locomotives and cars you need to run the railroad you are building, then keep everything else in a separate wish list.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4x8 HO layout cost to build?

Most come in somewhere between $800 and $1,500 once benchwork, track, turnouts, a DCC starter set, scenery and a couple of trains are counted. Second-hand track and one locomotive pull it well below that.

What is the most expensive part of a layout?

Turnouts, usually. They cost several times a length of flex track, you need more than the plan suggests, and each may want a switch machine.

Should I budget the whole layout at once?

Price it in full, then buy in phases - benchwork and track first, wiring next, scenery last. The total says whether the plan fits; the phases say what to spend this month.
