🏃 Running Pace Calculator
Enter a distance and a total time to calculate your pace per mile/km, plus your projected time for common race distances at that same pace.
Time divided by distance, then held flat
Hours, minutes and seconds are summed to one figure and divided by the distance. Every projection below the pace row is that same pace multiplied out - no fatigue curve is applied:
pace = (h × 3600 + m × 60 + s) / distance
projected time = pace × race distance
race distances: 5K, 10K, 21.0975 km, 42.195 km
Five miles in 45:00 is 2700 / 5 = 540 seconds, a 9:00 mile. At that pace the 5K row reads 27:58 and the marathon row 3:55:58. Switch to kilometres and the race rows swap to their metric distances.
Working the boxes
- Minutes and seconds stop at 59. Hours has no ceiling, so a two-hour run is 2 / 0 / 0, never 120 minutes.
- Empty counts as zero. Clearing the hours box is fine; clearing all three raises an error instead.
- Pace follows the unit you picked. Nothing converts the pace itself, so to see both, run the numbers once in each unit.
Frequently asked questions
What pace do I need for a 4 hour marathon?
9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per kilometre. Enter 26.2 miles with 4 hours 0 minutes and the pace row shows it.
What is a 9 minute mile in kilometres?
About 5:36 per km, since a mile is 1.60934 km. The tool will not convert that for you - set the unit to kilometres and enter the distance in km instead.
Is running pace the same as speed?
It is the inverse. Pace counts time per unit of distance, so a smaller number is faster, while speed counts distance per hour. A 9:00 mile is 6.67 mph.
