👣 Steps to Distance Converter
Enter your step count and stride length (height-based default provided) to estimate the distance you walked.
Height times 0.413, then inches to miles
Rather than ask for your stride, the tool derives it from height using the 0.413 walking factor that fitness trackers use, then converts total inches:
stride (in) = height (in) × 0.413
distance (mi) = steps × stride / 63360
distance (km) = miles × 1.609344
At 67 inches the stride comes to 27.7 in. Ten thousand steps is then 276,710 inches, which is 4.37 miles or 7.03 km. Someone 60 inches tall covers 3.91 miles for the identical step count, because the stride shrinks to 24.8 in.
Where the estimate drifts
- Walking only. Running stride is far longer than 0.413 of height, so logging a run through this converter understates the distance, often badly.
- Terrain and speed matter. Strolling a supermarket aisle, climbing stairs and marching along a flat path produce three different strides from the same legs.
- Measure once and check. Walk a marked 100 feet, count the steps and divide: 1200 inches over 44 steps is a 27.3 in stride. If that is far off the tool's figure, trust the tape.
Frequently asked questions
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4.37 miles, or 7.03 km, for someone 5 ft 7. At 5 ft 0 the same count is 3.91 miles, so height moves the answer by roughly half a mile either way.
How do I find my stride length?
Walk a measured distance at your normal pace and divide it by the steps taken. The 0.413 multiplier here is a population average, not your measurement.
Where does the 10,000 step target come from?
From a 1960s Japanese pedometer sold as the manpo-kei, or ten-thousand-step meter. It was a product name that stuck, not a figure derived from research.
