Pages left over days left
pages remaining = total pages − pages read
days remaining = target finish date − today (whole days)
pages per day = pages remaining / days remaining
progress = pages read / total pages × 100
The page opens on a 400-page book with 80 read and a finish date two weeks out: 320 pages over 14 days is 22.9 a day, with progress at 20.0%. Both dates are taken at midnight, so a target of tomorrow counts as one day and puts the whole remainder on a single sitting. A date of today, or any date in the past, is rejected rather than divided by zero, and entering more pages read than the book has is refused too.
Turning pages into minutes
- Pages are a poor unit of time. A printed page averages about 275 words, but a dense hardback runs past 350 and a dialogue-heavy paperback can fall under 150.
- Do the conversion once. 22.9 pages at 275 words is about 6,300 words, which at 238 words a minute – the average adult prose reading speed found in silent-reading meta-analyses – is roughly 26 minutes a day.
- Recheck it as you go. The days-left figure is recalculated against the real date each time you open the page, so a missed weekend shows up as a higher daily target rather than a quiet shortfall.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages a day to finish a 400-page book in two weeks?
About 29 a day from a standing start, or 22.9 if you have already read 80 pages. Halve the deadline and both figures double.
How long does reading 25 pages a day take?
Around 29 minutes for average prose – 25 pages is roughly 6,875 words at 275 a page, and 238 words a minute gets you through that in a little under half an hour.
What happens if I fall behind?
Reopen the page and it recalculates against today. The pages-per-day figure climbs, which is the honest signal: either read more each day or move the target date out.
