🎧 Audiobook Playback Speed Calculator
Enter an audiobook's normal (1x) length and your chosen playback speed to see how long it will actually take to listen to.
The arithmetic behind the saving
Length is converted to minutes, divided by the speed, and split back out:
total minutes = hours × 60 + minutes
listening time = total minutes / speed
time saved = total minutes − listening time
A 10h 30m book is 630 minutes. At 1.5x that is 420 minutes, or 7h 0m, saving 3h 30m. At 2x it falls to 5h 15m and the saving equals the listening time, because doubling the speed always halves the clock. The gains taper: going from 1x to 1.5x on this book saves 3h 30m, but 2x to 3x only saves another 1h 45m.
Choosing a speed you can actually follow
- Know your starting point. Audiobooks are narrated at roughly 150 to 160 words a minute, so a 10h 30m recording is on the order of 98,000 words – a normal novel.
- 1.5x is about reading pace. It lands near 230 words a minute, close to the 238 words a minute that silent-reading meta-analyses give as the average for adult prose. Past 2x you are asking for well above anything you would read on the page.
- Fiction and non-fiction differ. A narrative you can predict survives 2x; a technical argument you need to hold in your head often does not.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a 10-hour audiobook at 1.5x speed?
6 hours 40 minutes. At 1.25x it is 8 hours, at 1.75x about 5h 43m, and at 2x exactly 5 hours.
Does listening faster hurt comprehension?
Up to about 1.5x most listeners retain nearly as much as at normal speed. Above 2x, studies consistently find recall dropping, and the effect is larger for unfamiliar or information-dense material than for a novel.
What playback speed matches how fast I read?
Divide your reading speed by the narrator’s. At 238 words a minute against a 155-word narration that is about 1.5x. If you read at 300, 2x is the closer match.
