🎯 Annual Reading Goal Calculator
Enter your yearly reading goal and how many books you've finished so far to see the pace needed to hit your target by year end.
Pace is measured against the calendar, not the month
The tool reads today’s date and works in days:
expected by now = goal / days in year × days elapsed
remaining = max(0, goal − books read)
per week = remaining / days left × 7
per month = remaining / days left × 30.44
Take a goal of 52 books with 30 finished on day 252 of a 365-day year. Expected by now is 52 / 365 × 252 = 35.9 books, so the status line reports about 5.9 behind. The 22 books left over the remaining 113 days need 1.36 a week, or 5.9 a month – above the 4.3 a month the goal implies on average.
What the goal is really asking for
- Convert books into hours before committing. A 90,000-word novel at 238 words a minute – roughly the average for adult silent reading of prose – is about 6.3 hours. A book a week is therefore close to 54 minutes of reading every day.
- Every book counts as one. A 900-page doorstop and a 120-page novella move the counter equally, so a goal in books rewards short ones.
- The remaining-books figure never goes negative. Pass your goal and the per-week number sits at zero rather than showing a surplus.
Frequently asked questions
Is reading 52 books a year realistic?
It is a book a week. At an average adult prose rate near 238 words a minute, a typical 90,000-word novel takes about 6.3 hours, so the goal costs roughly an hour a day. Shorter books or audiobooks make it easier.
Why am I behind when I have read most of my goal?
The comparison is against the date, not the total. On day 252 of the year a 52-book goal expects 35.9 finished; 30 books is good progress but 5.9 short of that line.
How many books a month is a 52-book goal?
About 4.3 a month if you start in January and stay level. Once you fall behind, the tool raises the figure for the days that are actually left rather than spreading the shortfall over the whole year.
