📚 Game Shelf Storage Space Calculator

Enter how many games you own by typical box size to estimate the linear shelf space you'll need to store your collection.

Three counts, one width

Boxes are assumed to stand on edge, spine out, so only their width matters. Each size band carries a fixed thickness:

inches = (small × 2) + (medium × 3) + (large × 4)
feet = inches / 12

The defaults - 10 small, 8 medium, 4 large - give 20 + 24 + 16 = 60 inches, or 5.0 feet. That is two 30-inch bookshelf runs with nothing to spare. Ten more small boxes add 20 inches; ten more large ones add 40, which is why a shelf that held a decade of card games fills up in one Kickstarter year.

Turning inches into furniture

Billy-width shelf30 in15 small or 7 large

Fill a shelf to about 90% and leave the rest. Boxes wedged in tightly get their edges crushed on the way out, and a collection with no slack means the next purchase goes on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

How much shelf space do 50 board games need?

Around 135 inches, or 11.3 feet, for a typical mix of 25 small, 15 medium and 10 large boxes. That is four and a half Billy-width shelves.

How many board games fit in a Kallax cube?

About six small boxes or three large ones stood on edge, from roughly 13 inches of clear width. Big square boxes fit the 13-inch opening standing up, which is why the unit became the hobby default.

Is it better to store board games flat or upright?

Upright, spine out, as this calculator assumes. Stacking flat is kinder to loose components, but you unstack the pile to reach anything and the bottom box carries the weight.
