➗ Bill Split Evenly Calculator
Enter your subtotal, tax rate, and tip percentage to see an even per-person total, split equally among the group.
Tax and tip are both taken off the subtotal
The two percentages run in parallel, not in sequence - the tip is worked out on the food and drink, never on the tax:
tax = subtotal × (tax % / 100)
tip = subtotal × (tip % / 100)
total = subtotal + tax + tip
per person = total / people
The loaded example is a $100 subtotal, 8% tax and a 20% tip across four people: $8.00 tax, $20.00 tip, $128.00 total, $32.00 each. Tipping pre-tax is the convention, and the output row says so explicitly.
If your table prefers to tip on the taxed amount, put the taxed figure in the subtotal box and set tax to 0. Here that is $108 with a 20% tip: $21.60 of tip, $129.60 total, $32.40 a head - forty cents more each.
When an even split is the wrong answer
- Drinks are the flashpoint. Two bottles of wine on a $100 table has the non-drinkers subsidising everyone else by about the price of their own meal.
- The cents rarely land clean. $128.00 across three is $42.67 each, which collects $128.01 - a penny over rather than under.
- Cover the tip in the split. Paying only your food cost leaves one person tipping for the whole table.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator tip on the tax?
No. It applies the tip percentage to the subtotal only, which is the usual convention. To tip on the taxed amount instead, enter the taxed figure as the subtotal and set the tax box to 0.
How do you split a bill evenly with tax and tip?
Add tax and tip to the subtotal, then divide by the number of people. A $100 meal with 8% tax and a 20% tip comes to $128, which is $32 each across four people or $25.60 each across five.
Is splitting evenly fair if someone only had a salad?
Between similar orders it is fine and much faster. Once one order is roughly double another, or drinks are involved, split by what each person ordered and apportion tax and tip in the same proportions.
