🚗 Delivery Tip Calculator
Enter your order subtotal and choose to tip by percentage or a flat amount to see your tip and total.
Two ways to size the tip
The mode selector decides which line runs, and both land on the same total:
percentage mode: tip = subtotal × (value / 100)
flat mode: tip = value
total = subtotal + tip
The loaded order is $40 with 15% selected: a $6.00 tip and a $46.00 total. Switch the mode to flat and the same 15 in the value box becomes $15, so change the number when you change the mode.
The box says subtotal, and it means it
The percentage is taken on food only. Delivery fees, service fees and sales tax are not in the calculation, which matches how the tip is normally judged - and also means the amount you actually pay the app is higher than the total shown here. Add the fees and tax back yourself when you check your card statement.
Percentages fall apart on small orders. Fifteen percent of a $12 order is $1.80 for a driver making the same trip as one carrying $60 of food, which is why the flat mode is there: $4 to $5 is a common floor whatever the order is worth.
Frequently asked questions
How much should you tip a food delivery driver?
Fifteen to twenty percent of the food subtotal, with a floor of about $5 so small orders are not underpaid. Push higher for bad weather, a long drive, a walk-up apartment or an order heavy enough to need two hands.
Does the delivery fee go to the driver?
Usually not. It is charged by the restaurant or the delivery platform to cover their own costs, and the driver's pay comes from the platform plus your tip. A high delivery fee is not a reason to tip less.
Should I tip before or after delivery?
Most apps ask up front, and the offered tip affects who accepts the order, so a decent tip at checkout usually gets your food to you faster. You can raise it afterwards if the driver did well.
