What each of the six numbers means

FigureDefinition
CharactersEverything typed, spaces and line breaks included. An emoji counts as two.
Chars (No Spaces)The same with every space, tab and newline stripped. Punctuation still counts.
WordsRuns of letters, digits and underscores
LinesNon-empty lines only; blank ones are ignored
ParagraphsBlocks separated by one completely empty line
Avg Word LengthNon-space characters divided by words

That last division uses characters, not letters, so punctuation inflates it: Hello, world! reports 6.00 for two five-letter words. Treat it as a rough density measure rather than a true average.

Where the word boundaries fall

A word is a run of letters, digits or underscores, and anything else splits it:

don't             ->  don, t                (2 words)
state-of-the-art -> state, of, the, art (4 words)
3.5               ->  3, 5                  (2 words)
my_variable       ->  my_variable           (1 word)
café              ->  caf                   (1 word)
The frequency list is the top 20 by raw count with no stopwords removed, so the and and lead almost every English text. For a filtered ranking use the Word Frequency Counter.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my word count higher than the one in Word?

Word treats don't and well-known as single words. This tool splits at the apostrophe and the hyphen, so a contraction-heavy page can read several percent higher here.

Do spaces count as characters?

In the first box yes, in the second no. Chars (No Spaces) also drops tabs and line breaks, which is the figure most character limits on forms and meta descriptions actually mean.

How many words is 500 characters?

Around 80 to 90 in ordinary English prose, where words average five letters plus a space. The Avg Word Length figure lets you check that ratio for your own writing.
