🏀 Basketball Shooting Percentage Calculator
Enter field goals, three-pointers, and free throws made and attempted to compute your shooting percentages, including effective field goal percentage (eFG%).
Four percentages from six numbers
Each rate is makes divided by attempts, multiplied by 100. The fourth line is the only one that is not a plain ratio:
FG% = FGM / FGA × 100
3P% = 3PM / 3PA × 100
FT% = FTM / FTA × 100
eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA × 100
The figures the page opens with - 10 of 20 from the field, 3 of 8 from three, 5 of 6 at the line - give 50.0% FG, 37.5% 3P and 83.3% FT. For eFG% the three made triples count as 1.5 extra makes, so (10 + 1.5) / 20 = 57.5%. That half credit is the whole point: a three is worth 1.5 times a two, so a 37.5% three point shooter is scoring at the same rate as a 56.3% two point shooter.
Entering the numbers correctly
- Field goals include threes. In every box score, FGM and FGA are the totals for twos and threes together, and 3PM/3PA are a subset of them. Feeding 12 field goal attempts plus 8 three point attempts as if they were separate will understate FG% and inflate eFG%.
- Free throws stay out of it. They are not field goals, so they never touch FG% or eFG% - only the FT% line.
- Two point percentage is not shown, but you can get it by subtracting: (FGM - 3PM) / (FGA - 3PA), here 7 of 12, or 58.3%.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good field goal percentage?
For a guard taking a lot of jumpers, anything above 45% is solid. Centres finishing at the rim are usually 55-65%. League average sits near 46%.
Why is my eFG% higher than my FG%?
Because every three you made adds half a make to the numerator. If you hit no threes the two numbers are identical.
How do I calculate shooting percentage by hand?
Divide made by attempted and move the decimal two places. 7 made from 15 attempts is 0.4667, so 46.7%.
