📝 Script Word Count to Runtime Calculator

Enter your script's word count and speaking pace to estimate how long it will take to read aloud — useful for planning video or podcast episode length.

Words divided by pace

One division, then the decimal is split into minutes and seconds:

minutes = word count ÷ words per minute
seconds = the decimal part × 60

Fifteen hundred words at the default 150 wpm is exactly 10m 0s. The same script read briskly at 190 wpm runs 7m 54s; slowed to 130 wpm it stretches to 11m 32s. That is a 46% spread from one dropdown, which makes the pace setting the input worth getting right - the word count is the part you already know.

Turning a target runtime into a word count

Run the division backwards when you are writing to length: multiply the minutes you want by your pace. A ten-minute video at 150 wpm needs about 1,500 words, and a 60-second intro needs 150.

The seconds are rounded separately from the minutes, so a result just short of a whole minute can display as, say, 9m 60s rather than rolling over to 10m 0s.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 10-minute video?

About 1,500 at a conversational 150 words per minute. Allow fewer if you pause often or cut to footage without narration - 1,200 to 1,300 is a safer target for a talking-head video with breathing room.

What is a normal speaking pace?

Around 150 words per minute for narration, which is well below silent reading speed. Audiobooks sit near 150, news reading runs 160 to 180, and anything past 190 starts to feel rushed to a listener.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words aloud?

Six minutes 40 seconds at 150 wpm. At the slow end of 130 it is 7m 42s, and at a fast 190 it is 5m 16s.
