🎙️ Podcast Episode Length Budget Calculator
Enter your target total episode length to see a suggested time budget across intro, main content, ad breaks, and outro segments.
Five fixed percentages of your target length
Each segment is a share of the total, and the five shares add to 100%:
segment minutes = target length × share
intro 5% main content 75% ads 10% outro 5% buffer 5%
A 45-minute target gives 2.3 minutes of intro, 33.8 of main content, 4.5 of ads, 2.3 of outro and 2.3 of buffer. Those are rounded to one decimal for display, so they add to 45.2 rather than 45 - the underlying split is exact. A 20-minute episode comes out as 1.0, 15.0, 2.0, 1.0 and 1.0.
Where the default split needs overriding
The five percentages are baked into the page and cannot be edited here. They are one reasonable starting point, not a standard, and two of them break down at the extremes:
- Intro and outro are near-fixed costs, not proportions. Thirty to sixty seconds works whatever the episode length, so 5% is about right at 20 minutes and far too generous at 90, where it hands you a 4.5-minute intro.
- Ten percent of ads is on the high side. On a 45-minute episode that is 4.5 minutes - four or five spots. Many shows run one pre-roll and one mid-roll and land nearer 4%.
- Buffer is slack, not content. It absorbs the tangent that runs long. If you script tightly, fold it into main content.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a podcast episode be?
Long enough to cover the subject and no longer - the format decides. Interview shows commonly run 45 to 60 minutes, news roundups 10 to 20. The tool takes whatever target you type as given and divides it up.
How much of an episode should be ads?
The 10% used here is a ceiling rather than a norm. Two 60-second spots in a 45-minute episode is under 5%, and listeners notice the difference between two breaks and five far more than they notice the total minutes.
Why do the segment minutes not add up to my total?
Each row is rounded to one decimal place independently. Five rounded numbers can drift by a few tenths, which is why 45 minutes displays as 45.2 across the five segments.
