🔤 Number to Words Converter
Enter a whole number (up to 999,999,999,999) to spell it out in English words — handy for checks, contracts and invoices.
How the words are assembled
The number is split into groups of three digits from the right, each group is spelled out on its own, and a scale word is added to all but the last:
1,234,567 -> [1] million [234] thousand [567]
-> one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven
Inside a group, 1 to 19 have their own names, 20 to 99 take a tens word plus a hyphen when there is a unit left over, and anything from 100 up gets a hundreds word in front. Empty groups are skipped, so 1,000,000 is just "one million" rather than one million zero thousand.
Style, range and what it will not take
- No "and". The output is American style: 101 is "one hundred one". British usage would write "one hundred and one" - add it by hand if you are filling in a UK cheque.
- Short scale. A billion is a thousand million, and billion is where it stops: the ceiling is 999,999,999,999.
- Whole numbers only. 3.5 is rejected rather than rounded. For an amount, convert the whole units and write the cents as digits, the way "two thousand five hundred and 00/100" is normally set out.
- Zero and negatives work: 0 is "zero", -45 is "negative forty-five".
Frequently asked questions
How do you write 1234 in words?
One thousand two hundred thirty-four. Note the hyphen in thirty-four, which is standard for every compound number from twenty-one to ninety-nine.
How do I write an amount on a cheque?
Spell the whole currency units, then add the fraction as figures, for example "two thousand five hundred and 00/100". Fill the line to its end so nothing can be added after your text.
Is it "one hundred and twenty" or "one hundred twenty"?
Both are correct in their own dialect. This tool prints the American form without "and"; British English keeps it.
