⚖️ Truck Weight Capacity Checker

Compare your estimated total load weight against your rental truck's rated payload capacity to make sure you're not overloading it.

Check your specific rental truck's payload rating — it varies by size and model, and is listed in the vehicle specs or rental agreement.

The check the tool runs

Two numbers, three results. Your load is compared with the truck’s rated payload, and the verdict is a simple inequality:

percent used = load weight / rated payload × 100
margin = rated payload − load weight
status = within capacity when load weight ≤ rated payload

The defaults, 3,000 lbs into a 5,000 lb payload, read 60.0% used with 2,000 lbs to spare. Go one pound over and the status flips to a warning showing the excess. Exactly at the rating still counts as within capacity, which is the letter of the spec rather than a comfortable place to drive.

Getting a load weight worth checking

Leave the payload box blank and it falls back to 1 lb, which makes the percentage read in the hundreds of thousands. That is the fallback talking, not your load.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a house full of furniture weigh?

At roughly 7 lbs per cubic foot, a two bedroom load of about 600 cu ft is near 4,200 lbs. Books, tools and appliances push the density well above that average; clothes and bedding pull it below.

What percent of a truck’s capacity is safe to load?

Aim to finish under about 90%. The last tenth is what absorbs the things you forgot, and an overloaded truck stops longer, leans further in corners and works its tires harder on a long drive.

How do I know a rental truck’s payload?

Subtract the curb weight from the gross vehicle weight rating; both are on the sticker inside the driver’s door. Rental sites publish the same figure per model.
