💰 Leather Project Cost Calculator
Enter your hide cost per square foot, square footage used, hardware cost, and labor time to see your total project cost.
What the total adds up
Three lines, one sum. Leather is priced by area, labour by the hour, hardware as a flat figure you total yourself:
materials = cost per sq ft × sq ft used
labour = hours × hourly rate
total = materials + hardware + labour
The defaults are a small project: 3 sq ft at $5 is $15 of leather, $8 of hardware, and 2 hours at $15 is $30, for $53. Labour is 57 % of that total, which is normal — in hand-stitched work the leather is rarely the expensive part.
Getting the inputs honest
- Enter footage bought, not footage in the finished piece. If your pattern parts come to 3 sq ft and you cut at 75 % yield, you consumed 4 sq ft, so the leather line is $20 rather than $15.
- Hardware means every fitting. Buckle, rivets, snaps, D-rings, magnets, the zip and its pull. Price them at the per-unit rate you actually paid, not the bulk pack price divided evenly if you will never use the rest of the pack.
- Put in a rate even as a hobbyist. Zero labour hides the real cost of the piece. A nominal $15–25 an hour tells you whether a wallet that takes six hours can ever sell for $60.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to make a leather belt?
A 1.5 in by 48 in blank is 0.5 sq ft, so at $8 per foot the strap is $4. Add a $12 buckle and 1.5 hours at $20 and the build costs $46 before finish and packaging.
What hourly rate should a leatherworker use?
Hobbyists selling occasionally usually put in $15–25. Full-time makers need $35–60 to cover tools, rent, unpaid admin and the hides that get cut wrong.
How do I turn this cost into a selling price?
Most small makers multiply the total by 1.5 to 2 for direct sales, and by about 2.2 if they also want a wholesale price at half of retail.
