📿 Necklace Length Reference Chart
A quick reference for standard necklace length names and how they typically sit.
The six standard lengths
The names are trade shorthand for where a chain falls on an average adult frame. Metric equivalents matter if you are stringing beads, since bead diameters are quoted in millimetres:
| Name | Inches | Millimetres |
|---|---|---|
| Collar | 12-13 | 305-330 |
| Choker | 14-16 | 356-406 |
| Princess | 17-19 | 432-483 |
| Matinee | 20-24 | 508-610 |
| Opera | 28-36 | 711-914 |
| Rope | 36+ | 914+ |
Princess at 18 in is the default for a pendant, and the bands leave real gaps - nothing is named at 25 to 27 in, which is why that length is usually sold as an adjustable matinee.
Choosing a length that fits the wearer
- Measure the neck first. Most adult necks run 13 to 16 in around. A choker must clear that by an inch or two, so a 14 in choker is snug on a 13 in neck and will not close on a 15 in one.
- The stated length includes the clasp. Measure an existing necklace end to end with the clasp done up, laid flat.
- A pendant adds drop. A 1.5 in pendant on an 18 in chain hangs where a 19.5 in chain would, which moves it from collarbone to just below.
- Longer necklaces need more clearance. Anything under about 30 in has to pass over the head or carry a working clasp.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common necklace length?
18 in, the middle of the princess range. It sits at or just below the collarbone on most adults and suits nearly any pendant.
How long is a choker necklace?
14 to 16 in, resting on the neck itself rather than the collarbone. A collar is shorter again at 12 to 13 in and sits at the base of the throat.
What length necklace is best for a pendant?
18 to 20 in for most pendants. Add the pendant's own height to judge the drop: a 2 in pendant on a 20 in chain reads as 22 in.
