⚖️ Bead Strand Weight Estimator
Enter your bead diameter, material, and how many beads are on the strand to estimate the total weight — useful for gauging comfort or shipping weight.
How the weight is worked out
Each bead is treated as a solid sphere. The diameter converts from millimetres to centimetres, the sphere volume is taken, then multiplied by the density of the material and the bead count:
r (cm) = (diameter mm / 10) / 2
V = (4/3) × π × r³
weight = V × density × bead count
An 8 mm bead has r = 0.4 cm and a volume of 0.268 cm³. In glass at 2.5 g/cm³ that is 0.670 g each, so a 50 bead strand comes to 33.5 g. Volume follows the cube of the radius, which is why size matters more than count: 25 beads of 10 mm weigh 32.7 g, almost the same as fifty 8 mm beads.
The five densities, and what the model ignores
| Material | Density | 8 mm bead |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | 0.7 g/cm³ | 0.188 g |
| Acrylic | 1.19 g/cm³ | 0.319 g |
| Glass | 2.5 g/cm³ | 0.670 g |
| Stone / quartz | 2.65 g/cm³ | 0.710 g |
| Sterling silver | 10.36 g/cm³ | 2.777 g |
Sterling at 10.36 is the density of the 925 alloy, not fine silver. Fifty 8 mm sterling beads weigh 138.9 g, or 4.47 troy ounces at 31.1035 g each - heavy enough to matter for comfort and postage alike.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a strand of 8 mm glass beads weigh?
About 0.67 g per bead, so a 16 inch strand of roughly 50 beads is near 33 g, plus the stringing wire, clasp and any spacers.
How many grams is an 8 mm sterling silver bead?
2.78 g if solid. Most commercial silver rounds are hollow or thin-walled and come in well under a gram, so weigh one before pricing a strand by metal.
Why does doubling the bead size add so much weight?
Weight goes with the cube of the radius. A 16 mm bead is eight times the volume of an 8 mm one, so one 16 mm glass round equals eight 8 mm rounds.
