🪑 Seating Chart Table Calculator
Enter your guest count and seats per table to find out how many tables you need and how many leftover seats you'll have.
Tables, seats and the gap between them
The table count rounds up, because a part-full table is still a table:
tables = ceil(guests / seats per table)
total seats = tables × seats per table
leftover = total seats - guests
The defaults show it clearly: 87 guests at 8 a table is 10.875, so 11 tables, 88 seats and one seat empty. Move to 10 a table and it is 9 tables, 90 seats and three spare. Both figures must be positive or the tool asks for valid input, and seats per table is capped at 20.
What a seat is worth in inches and square feet
Seating capacity comes from table edge. Allow 22 to 24 inches of perimeter per place setting, which is where the standard counts come from:
| Table | Comfortable | Squeezed |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in round (188 in around) | 8 | 10 |
| 72 in round (226 in around) | 10 | 12 |
| 8 ft banquet rectangle | 8 | 10 |
| 6 ft banquet rectangle | 6 | 8 |
Floor space runs about 12.5 sq ft per seated guest once chairs and walkways are counted, so those 88 seats want roughly 1,100 sq ft before any dance floor, bar or buffet line.
Frequently asked questions
How many tables do I need for 100 guests?
Thirteen at eight a table, giving 104 seats and four spare, or ten tables at ten a table with none spare. Add a table if you also need a head table or a place for vendors.
How many people fit at a 60 inch round table?
Eight in comfort. The rim is about 188 inches, so eight settings get 23 inches each; ten is possible at 19 inches apiece and gets tight once chargers and glassware are down.
How much room does a seated dinner need?
Around 12.5 sq ft per guest, so 100 guests need about 1,250 sq ft of seating area. A dance floor adds roughly another 3 sq ft per guest on top.
