Oil as a share of wax

Fragrance load is weighed against the wax alone, never against the finished candle:

load % = fragrance oil weight / wax weight × 100
oil needed = wax weight × target load

The defaults, 48 g of oil in 600 g of wax, come out at 8.00 percent. Run it the other way and 600 g of wax at a 6 percent target needs 36 g of oil, at 10 percent 60 g. Everything is weighed, not measured by volume — fragrance oils differ in density, so millilitres will not give you a repeatable load.

Most container waxes are rated to hold 8 to 10 percent, and 8 is the usual starting point. The maximum belongs to the wax you bought, so check its data sheet rather than the range.

Past the wax's rated load the oil stops binding. It beads on the surface, sinks into a layer at the base of the jar and can feed the flame, which is a fire risk, not a stronger scent. If the throw is weak, cure the candle a week or two longer and try a larger wick before adding oil.

Is the percentage of the wax or of the whole candle?

Of the wax, which is the trade convention this tool follows. 48 g of oil in 600 g of wax is 8 percent by that measure but 7.41 percent of the 648 g poured, so a supplier quoting on total weight is not talking about the same number.
