What counts as up
Every five minutes a scheduled run sends a plain GET to each unpaused monitor and waits up to ten seconds for the response headers. The verdict is deliberately coarse:
status 200-499 up - something answered
status 500-599 down - the server broke
timeout, DNS failure, refused down - nothing answered
uptime % = up checks / the last 100 kept, one decimal
A 404 or a 403 therefore counts as up: the question is "is a server responding here", not "is the right page there". Three failures in the last hundred checks read as 97.0%, and at five-minute spacing those hundred cover about eight hours - a live figure, not a monthly one.
Alerts, pausing and limits
- Email is sent only when the state flips, once going down and once coming back. A site down all night produces two emails, not a hundred.
- The first check never emails. A new monitor starts at unknown, so its opening result just sets the baseline.
- Pausing stops the checks and costs nothing, as do editing and deleting. Creating one is free too while SimpleMoney is in beta.
- Monitors are free while SimpleMoney is in beta. The ceiling is 25 per account, because a monitor is checked forever and that cost is ours whether or not you are charged for it.
Frequently asked questions
My page returns a 404 - why does the monitor say it is up?
Because anything from 200 to 499 means a server answered. A missing page or a blocked request is a different problem from an unreachable host, and only 5xx responses, timeouts and connection failures are recorded as down.
How often will I be emailed while my site is down?
Once. The alert fires on the change of state and then stays quiet however long the outage lasts; a second email arrives when the site answers again.
What period does the uptime percentage cover?
The last 100 recorded checks. At one check every five minutes that is about eight hours and twenty minutes of history, so it reacts quickly and will not tell you what last month looked like.
