How a digest is put together
One scheduled run a day works out which feeds are due, fetches each, keeps only entries it has not seen before, and sends a single email covering all of them:
daily due on every run
weekly due only on a Monday (UTC), never twice in a day
new entries whose ids are not in the last 300 already seen
email one per person, and only if a due feed had something new
Subscribe to three daily feeds and you get one email, not three - each feed becomes a section inside it. A quiet Tuesday means no email at all, which is intended rather than a fault.
Limits worth knowing before you subscribe
- Ten new entries per feed per run. A feed that dumps forty posts at once cannot flood one email; the rest are not marked seen and arrive over the following runs.
- Each entry is trimmed to 400 characters of its own description, HTML stripped. This is headlines and snippets; full articles are never pulled in.
- Feeds are free while SimpleMoney is in beta, and no account may hold more than 15.
- A feed that fails to fetch - down, slow past 10 seconds, or not valid RSS or Atom - is left due and simply retried on the next run.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the digest arrive?
There is one run a day and no per-user send time, so it lands at roughly the same hour each day rather than one you choose. Weekly feeds are checked on Mondays, judged in UTC.
Why did I not get a digest this morning?
Usually because nothing new had been published since the last run - an email goes out only when a due feed has an unseen entry. A feed that could not be fetched also sends nothing and is retried tomorrow.
Will subscribing to an old blog email me its entire archive?
No. The first run takes at most ten entries and works through the rest a few at a time, and only a feed's 30 most recent entries are ever read.
