Where the location comes from

This takes an IP address - 8.8.8.8, not example.com - and returns what the geolocation databases say about it: country, region, city, coordinates, and the ISP or organisation holding the block.

None of that is measured. An IP address contains no location; it is a routing number. The answer is assembled from who a regional registry allocated the block to, what the ISP itself publishes about where it uses those addresses, and inference from network latency and from users who have volunteered their position. It is a lookup in a table someone else maintains, and it is wrong at exactly the rate that table is wrong.

How much to trust each field

FieldTypical reliability
CountryHigh. This is the field worth acting on - tax, licensing and fraud rules run on it.
ISP / organisationHigh, and often the most useful line: it tells you hosting from residential from mobile.
Region / cityMixed. Fine on fixed broadband in a dense country, poor on mobile networks, where one gateway can cover a region.
CoordinatesA centre point, never a street. When a city is unknown, databases fall back to the middle of the country.
That fallback has consequences. MaxMind's placeholder for "somewhere in the United States" was a set of coordinates that landed on one rented farmhouse in Kansas, which spent years receiving visits over crimes traced to 600 million addresses. Coordinates from any of these databases identify a region, not a household.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Country is right almost always. City is the field people over-trust: providers generally claim something in the region of 50 to 80 percent within 50 km, and that figure falls sharply on mobile connections, on carrier-grade NAT, and in countries where one ISP routes a whole region through a single exchange.

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

Not from a lookup like this one. The best it gives is your ISP and a city-level guess, sometimes a neighbouring city. The address behind the connection is held by the ISP and released to law enforcement on legal process, not to a web tool.

Why does my IP show the wrong city?

Usually because the location recorded is where your ISP terminates the block rather than where you sit - common with mobile data, satellite, and business lines routed through a head office. A VPN moves it to the exit server. If it matters, most database vendors take correction requests directly, though each one has to be told separately.
