Pounds per guest, then bags
total ice = guests x pounds per person
10 lb bags = ceiling(total ice / 10)The defaults put 40 guests at 1.25 lb each, which is 50 lb of ice and 5 bags. The bag size is fixed at 10 lb because that is what the sack in the gas-station freezer weighs; if you are buying 20 lb bags, halve the bag figure yourself. The total keeps one decimal place, so an odd rate like 1.1 lb over 35 guests shows 38.5 lb and still rounds up to 4 bags.
Picking the pounds-per-person rate
- 1 lb - indoor party, drinks already cold, ice only goes in the glass.
- 1.25 to 1.5 lb - the default range for a normal three-hour gathering with a drinks table.
- 2 lb - you are chilling the drinks too. A cooler takes roughly 1 lb of ice per 2 cans, so a 48-quart one swallows 20 lb on its own.
- 3 lb - outdoors in summer, or an event running past five hours.
At 40 guests, 2 lb each is 80 lb and 8 bags; a hot afternoon takes it to 120 lb and 12 bags. Ice is the cheapest thing on a party list and the most annoying to run out of.
