🔠Font Pairing Tool
Browse curated heading/body Google Font pairings with a live preview, then copy the CSS
font-family values for each.
What makes these ten pairings work
Every pairing here sets a display face for headings against a plainer face for body copy, and the output is two rules:
h1, h2, h3 { font-family: 'Playfair Display', sans-serif; }
body { font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', sans-serif; }
The pattern is contrast of class, not of flavour. Playfair Display and DM Serif Display are high-contrast serifs with thin hairlines that look sharp at 32px and muddy at 14px, so they take the headings; Source Sans Pro and DM Sans are low-contrast, open-aperture sans faces built for small sizes, so they take the body. Where both halves are sans - Poppins with Roboto, Space Grotesk with Inter - the separation comes from shape instead: geometric circular letterforms above, neutral grotesque below.
Before you paste it
- Fix the fallback. The generated CSS ends
sans-seriffor every pairing, including the serif headings. Change it toseriffor Playfair Display, Libre Baskerville, Merriweather, Abril Fatface and DM Serif Display, so the substitute during loading is not wildly off. - Copy the font link too. The rules name families but do not
fetch them. You need the matching
<link>to fonts.googleapis.com in your own page, or the text silently falls back. - Request only the weights you use. This page loads headings at 600-700 and bodies at 400. Each extra weight is another file.
Frequently asked questions
What font goes well with Montserrat?
Merriweather, which is the pairing listed here. Montserrat is geometric and wide, so a sturdy serif with tall x-height underneath keeps long paragraphs readable without competing.
Can I use two sans-serif fonts together?
Yes, if they are clearly different in construction. Poppins over Roboto works because one is circular and geometric and the other is neutral. Two similar grotesques just look like a mistake.
How many Google Fonts will slow down my site?
Count weights, not families. Two families at two weights each is four files and is fine. Loading a full family at nine weights, or three families, is where it starts costing you visibly on a slow connection.
