Aquarium Total Weight Calculator
Estimate the total weight of a fully set up aquarium — water, empty tank, and substrate — to help choose an appropriately rated stand. Always follow your specific stand or furniture manufacturer's weight rating rather than relying solely on this estimate.
Water is most of it
water weight = gallons × 8.34 lb
total = water + empty tank + substrate
Fresh water weighs 8.34 lb per US gallon, so 55 gallons is 458.7 lb. Add a 78 lb glass tank and 45 lb of gravel and the stand carries 582 lb - four fifths of it water. Saltwater at 1.026 runs about 8.55 lb/gal, roughly 12 lb more on the same 55 gallons.
Getting the three inputs right
- Enter real water volume, not the label. Substrate, rock and a couple of inches of freeboard take a nominal 55 down to about 48 gallons of actual water.
- Substrate by the box: 2 in of gravel over a 48 × 13 in base is 1,248 cubic inches, about 0.72 cubic feet, and aquarium gravel runs near 100 lb per cubic foot - so roughly 70 lb. Sand is heavier again.
- Rockwork counts. A reef with 1 lb of rock per gallon adds another 50 lb to this tank, and a sump adds its own.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a full 55 gallon aquarium weigh?
Around 582 lb: 459 lb of water, a 78 lb glass tank and 45 lb of substrate. Empty it weighs 78 lb, which is why you fill a tank in place.
Does saltwater weigh more than fresh water?
Yes, about 8.55 lb per gallon against 8.34, so a 55 gallon marine tank is some 12 lb heavier than the same tank in fresh water. It rarely changes the stand you need, but it is real load.
Will my floor take a large aquarium?
Spread matters more than total weight. Work out pounds per square foot from the footprint, run the long side across the joists, and get advice for anything over 75 gallons on an upper floor.
